Eyes Open in the Dark

The thing about persistence is that it challenges confidence
The thing about confidence is it requires  focus
I am devient when it comes to this fleeting mess
Formally known as a character defect
I’ve got to treat it gently if I expect it to last
And yet
I’ve got to jump all over it until it starts to crack
Until it cuts through my teeth like shards of invisible glass
Each piece is another, less conspicuous defect
They ask that I move forward by looking at my past
Learn to love myself by examining my regrets
There’s serenity in the toil of this delicate balance
The complication exists in the simplicity of finding it.
